HAWK-EYE SPOTLIGHT: FIRE PREVENTION SAFETY TIPS

Fire Prevention Week is in October, which makes this a great time for fire preparedness. Take a few minutes to review these important fire prevention tips:

Test your fire alarms. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) said that about 60% of all home fire deaths occur in houses without fire alarms or with inoperable fire alarms. Fire alarms should be tested monthly and replaced every 10 years.

Position your fire extinguishers close to exits. Fire extinguishers can save lives and prevent costly damage, but should never be used if doing so jeopardizes a safe escape. Use a multi-purpose fire extinguisher that works on all types of fire and remember the word PASS when using: Pull the pin, Aim low, Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly, and Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

Never cook unattended. The No. 1 reason for kitchen fires is unattended cooking, and most of these fires involve using the stovetop. Keep the stovetop clear of oven mitts, towels, food packaging and anything else that can catch fire. NFPA recommends establishing a three-foot perimeter around the stove and declaring it a kid-free zone.

Have an escape plan. Draw a map of your home and highlight all doors and windows. Recognize two ways out of every room. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year and if you have children, make sure they know what to do in case an adult can't help. Everyone should meet at the same place after leaving the home.

Educate your children. Kids are never too young to learn about fire dangers. The Sparky the Fire Dog website is a safe, interactive and ad-free environment filled with educational activities about fire prevention.
